Weather predictions for North Carolina impede area sports

The North Carolina High School Athletics Association (NCHSAA) is canceling and rescheduling postseason events, including swimming and wrestling championships, due to predicted inclement weather in and around the area.

The organization canceled both the swimming and diving regionals, as well as brackets and team dual wrestling tournaments.

The state’s swimming championships are scheduled for February 4-7.

And for wrestling, the dual team playoffs’ brackets, which were scheduled to publish today, will post Friday morning. The first and second rounds of dual team playoffs are pushed back to February 3rd while the third and fourth rounds are slated for Thursday, February 5.

The final state dual championships are still scheduled for next Saturday, February 7.

Union Pines Coach named National Coach of the Year

Union Pines’ Head Wrestling Brian Gray coach was named the highly-coveted National Coach of the Year as voted on by the National Federation of State High School Association. Union Pines boys team has consistently been the program to beat in the state, perennially producing wins as both team duals and individual wrestlers.

Union Pines girls improve to 12-4

In local hoops, Union Pines swept South Johnston yesterday. The girls and boys winning 45-34 and 85-62, respectively. The Lady Vikings are on a 4 game win streak, looking to extend the momentum to improve to 13-4 when they travel to Harnett Central Friday.

Hornets win four-straight, pass last season’s record

The Hornets earned a win on the road in Memphis yesterday, 112-97. Mouss Diabate made all the difference in the paint registering 19 total boards in the contest, scoring 18, while Brandon Miller led all scorers with 26.

Charlotte fans have hope this season as the program surpasses last year. The Hornets’ 20-28 record this year has already surpassed last year’s dismal 19-62 finish. They play the Mavs tonight in Dallas.

And in college hoops, East Carolina continues to struggle, falling to Rice yesterday 83-77. Seven of their 8 recent losses came down to single digit differences.
