Sandhills News Minute: School Gun Charge, Methadone Theft Arrest, and New Veteran Mental Health Support

North Carolina has seen significant news across multiple fronts. In Hoke County, a teacher has been charged with bringing a gun onto school property at Hawk Eye Elementary in Red Springs. The weapon was found in her car on campus, and she has since resigned after receiving an unsecured bond.

Meanwhile, authorities in Moore County arrested Sanford resident Betty Sanderford this October over the alleged theft of methadone from Dahlia Gardens Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Aberdeen. The theft was initially reported in March, leading to extensive investigations and a felony larceny warrant. Sanderford was released on a written promise to appear in court.

In brighter news, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with CHESS Health and Diamond Mind, has launched the Connections: Recovery Support app, a free digital platform designed to bolster mental health support for veterans. With over 615,000 veterans in North Carolina, the app offers 24/7 peer support, moderated online groups, and daily check-ins. Sessions tailored to veterans will begin November 10, enhancing access and reducing stigma around mental health and substance use.
