Rockingham US-1 Interchange Closure Scheduled for Roundabout Construction

Drivers traveling through Richmond County should prepare for detours as the Rockingham US-1 interchange closure begins March 9.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced the temporary closure of the U.S. 1 interchange where it crosses over the U.S. 74 Bypass in Rockingham.

Roundabouts and Bridge Work Planned

The Rockingham US-1 interchange closure will allow crews to build new roundabouts on both sides of the interchange ramps while also completing bridge maintenance.

NCDOT officials say the work will improve safety and traffic flow at the busy intersection.

Crews will also perform preservation work on the bridge to extend its lifespan and create a smoother riding surface.

Detours Expected Until Mid-April

During the closure, traffic on U.S. 1 will be detoured along West Eason Drive, Old Cheraw Highway, and Spring Street.

Drivers traveling along U.S. 74 will still be able to pass underneath the bridge but will not be able to access Exit 311.

Instead, motorists will be directed to use Exit 316 and travel along N.C. 177 and Airport Road to reconnect with U.S. 1.

Transportation officials say the closure is expected to last until April 15, weather permitting.

The overall roundabout project is expected to be completed later this summer.

Drivers traveling between the Sandhills and Richmond County should allow additional travel time and remain alert for construction crews.
