Robbins Opportunity Zone Proposal Could Bring New Investment to Moore County

The proposed Robbins Opportunity Zone could open the door to new economic development opportunities in northwestern Moore County after county commissioners agreed to support a nomination for federal Opportunity Zone designation.

The Moore County Board of Commissioners recently voted to co-sponsor a nomination submitted by the Moore County Economic Development Partnership (MCEDP). The nomination seeks inclusion in North Carolina’s latest round of Opportunity Zone designations, which are designed to encourage long-term private investment in qualifying communities.

If approved by the state, the designation would remain in effect through 2037 and could help attract new businesses, development projects, and investment dollars to the Robbins area.

What Is the Robbins Opportunity Zone Proposal?

The Robbins Opportunity Zone proposal focuses on Census Tract 9502.01, which includes much of the Town of Robbins and portions of northwestern Moore County.

Opportunity Zones are federally recognized areas that qualify for special tax incentives intended to encourage private investment in communities that meet specific economic criteria.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce is currently accepting nominations through June 21 before selecting which areas will receive the designation.

According to economic development officials, Robbins presents a strong candidate because of its existing infrastructure, available utilities, and opportunities for future growth.

Why Robbins Was Selected

Moore County Economic Development Partnership staff believe the Robbins area offers several advantages that make it attractive for future investment.

The town already has a concentration of development activity and utility services that could support new commercial projects, manufacturing operations, housing developments, and business expansion.

Supporters say the Robbins Opportunity Zone could help make the community more competitive when attracting investors looking for locations with long-term growth potential.

Economic development leaders also note that Robbins sits in an area where strategic investment could benefit not only the town itself but surrounding communities throughout Moore County.

Potential Benefits for Moore County

If approved, the Opportunity Zone designation could provide tax advantages to investors who commit capital to projects within the designated area.

Those incentives are designed to encourage investments that create jobs, improve infrastructure, support redevelopment, and strengthen local economies.

While no specific projects have been announced, supporters believe the designation could increase interest from developers, entrepreneurs, and businesses considering expansion into Moore County.

The Robbins Opportunity Zone could also help position the area for future economic opportunities at a time when many communities across North Carolina are competing for investment and growth.

What Happens Next?

The North Carolina Department of Commerce will review nominations submitted from across the state before determining which census tracts receive Opportunity Zone status.

If selected, the designation would remain active until 2037, creating a long-term opportunity to attract private capital and encourage development in the Robbins area.

County leaders and economic development officials say they will continue working together to identify opportunities that support responsible growth while strengthening the local economy.
