The Village of Pinehurst and Pinehurst Police Department have launched a new community initiative designed to help residents recognize scams, report suspicious activity and receive assistance when something does not seem right.
The program, called Silver Shield, provides scam-prevention information and gives residents a direct connection to local detectives through a new cybercrime hotline.
Residents who encounter a suspicious telephone call, text message, email, social-media interaction or possible account takeover can call the Pinehurst Police Cybercrime Hotline at 910-420-1654.
Detectives can help callers evaluate suspicious activity, determine appropriate next steps and connect possible victims with additional resources. The hotline is monitored during normal business hours and should not be used for emergencies.
Free Cybercrime Prevention Event
Silver Shield will be introduced during a free Cybercrime Prevention Community Event on Tuesday, September 29, from 2 until 4 p.m. at Pinehurst Assembly Hall, located at 395 Magnolia Road.
Pinehurst police officers will discuss common scams, online threats, ways to protect personal and financial information and what residents should do when they suspect fraud. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions about suspicious situations they have encountered.
The program places particular emphasis on protecting older adults, who are frequently targeted by financial scams. However, Silver Shield and the September 29 event are open to the entire Pinehurst community, including caregivers and family members.
Stop, Question, Verify and Report
Police recommend that residents avoid responding immediately when someone demands money or personal information. Warning signs include requests for payment using gift cards or cryptocurrency, threats of arrest or utility disconnection and instructions not to discuss the request with family members or financial institutions.
Anyone who believes a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger should call 911. Other non-emergency police assistance is available by calling Pinehurst Police at 910-295-3141.
The September 29 community event is free, and advance registration is not required.
