Two Officers Injured During Candor Standoff; SBI Takes Over Investigation

Two law-enforcement officers were injured during an hourslong standoff in Candor on Tuesday, according to information released by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

A state trooper and a deputy suffered injuries from shrapnel during the incident. Officials have not released the extent of their injuries or their current conditions.

Officers reportedly came under gunfire

Authorities said dispatchers received a welfare-check request in the Brutonville community shortly after 10 a.m. Candor police officers and North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers responded to a home in the 100 block of Wiley Drive, where officials say officers came under gunfire.

Additional agencies secured the area as the incident developed into a barricade situation. Crisis-intervention personnel and negotiators worked for several hours seeking a peaceful resolution.

Barricaded man airlifted

The standoff ended around 3 p.m. when authorities said the barricaded man suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported by medical helicopter to a hospital. His identity and medical condition have not been released.

SBI leading investigation

The response included the Montgomery and Moore county sheriff’s offices, Candor Police Department, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Troy Police Department and Biscoe Police Department.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will lead the continuing investigation and process the scene.
