North Carolina public-school students will follow substantially revised mathematics standards beginning in 2028 following a unanimous vote by the State Board of Education.
The standards cover every grade level and emphasize practical problem-solving, technology and applying mathematics to real-world situations.
Math 3 and Math 4 to be replaced
High-school students will continue to complete four math credits, including Math 1 and Math 2. Math 3 and Math 4 will no longer be required courses under the new structure.
Students will instead choose two electives suited to their plans after graduation. Counselors are expected to help students select pathways connected to college, careers or military service.
Planned options include applied statistics and data science, mathematical and statistical modeling, applied logic and reasoning, Advanced Placement courses and approved college or International Baccalaureate classes.
More emphasis on practical applications
The revised standards call for students to understand mathematical concepts, build fluency and apply those skills to situations they may encounter outside the classroom.
School districts will select instructional materials and develop lessons during the preparation period before the standards take effect in 2028.
