The Moore County Board of Education is reviewing proposed changes to a policy governing parental involvement and classroom instruction involving sexuality, gender identity and gender fluidity.
The discussion centers on Policy 1310/4002, which was compared with a model policy from the North Carolina School Boards Association. The school system’s current policy prohibits sexuality instruction in kindergarten through fourth grade and bars instruction on gender identity or gender fluidity.
The proposed revisions have not received final approval. The language is expected to return to the board’s policy committee before advancing to a second reading and a possible vote by the full school board.
The issue is likely to draw continued interest from parents, educators and community members because any approved changes could affect classroom guidance, parental notification and how age-sensitive topics are addressed in Moore County schools.
The Board of Education’s next work session and regular meeting are scheduled for October 12. Public comments will be accepted during the regular meeting, which begins at 5 p.m.
Residents who want to follow the proposal should review future board agendas and policy documents before the meeting. Until the board completes its review and takes a final vote, the proposed revisions should not be described as adopted policy.
