The possibility of Moore County Airport commercial air service is generating questions and concerns from residents in neighboring Whispering Pines.
Airport officials met with the Whispering Pines Village Council and residents Wednesday to discuss what scheduled passenger service could look like and how it could affect the surrounding community.
Among the concerns raised were the possibility of increased aircraft noise, additional road and air traffic, and whether commercial service could eventually lead to expansion of the airport’s current footprint.
Airport Officials Discuss Potential Service
Airport Authority Chairman Adam Kiker and Airport Director Rick Cloutier spent roughly three hours answering questions and listening to residents.
Airport leaders emphasized that the proposed Moore County Airport commercial air service would not be expected to dramatically change daily airport operations.
The airport is currently in discussions with a regional airline about providing scheduled passenger service between Moore County and Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C.
Under the proposal being discussed, the airport could see one departing passenger flight and one arriving flight each day of the week. Service could potentially begin around early summer 2027.
Fundraising Effort Continues
Moore County previously had limited commercial passenger service, but that service ended approximately 20 years ago after it was determined to no longer be financially feasible.
A community fundraising effort is now working to establish a minimum revenue guarantee fund designed to help attract passenger air service.
The fundraising goal is $3 million, with approximately $2 million already pledged by more than 30 investors.
The Moore County Tourism Development Authority recently approved $300,000 toward the effort. Other organizations supporting the initiative include the USGA, Pinehurst Resort, and FirstHealth.
Airport leaders are also waiting for a decision on a potential $1 million federal Small Community Air Service Development grant.
For Sandhills residents, the discussion over Moore County Airport commercial air service is likely to remain a major local issue as airport leaders work toward a possible 2027 launch and nearby communities continue asking questions about the potential impact.
