Marcus Mason House Fire Under Investigation After Sanford Tragedy

The Marcus Mason House Fire remains under investigation after an overnight fire in Sanford claimed the life of Lee County Board of Education member Marcus Phillip Mason. Emergency crews were called to a home on Summerset Place around 2:35 a.m. Wednesday, where firefighters later found Mason deceased inside the residence.

The Sanford Police Department identified Mason, 59, as the victim. Authorities have not released the cause of the fire, and investigators with both the Sanford Police Department and Sanford Fire Department are continuing to review what happened.

Marcus Mason House Fire Investigation Continues in Sanford

According to local reporting from Moore County News and The Rant, firefighters responded to the 1300 block of Summerset Place after a house fire was reported in the early morning hours. Crews worked to put out the flames before discovering Mason inside the home.

Mason had recently been appointed to the Lee County Board of Education by the Lee County Republican Party to fill the remainder of a vacant term. He had also filed to run for the seat in the 2026 election.

The Marcus Mason House Fire is being watched closely across Lee County and the greater Sandhills region because of Mason’s public service and role in local education.
