A woman accused of shooting a 63-year-old Laurinburg man and stealing his vehicle was arrested after police say she arrived at the same hospital where the victim was receiving treatment.
The Laurinburg shooting suspect was identified by police as 36-year-old Shirl Marie Jacobs of Omega Avenue.
Police Respond to Omega Avenue Shooting
Laurinburg Police officers responded to the 16000 block of Omega Avenue at approximately 10:55 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, after receiving a report that someone had been shot.
When officers arrived, they found 63-year-old John Edwin McNeill in the front yard with multiple apparent gunshot wounds, according to police.
Investigators said McNeill was able to identify the person he believed had shot him. He also told officers that the suspect had taken his vehicle.
Scotland County EMS transported McNeill to Scotland Memorial Hospital. Police said he was awaiting transportation to an out-of-town medical facility when the investigation took an unexpected turn.
Suspect Allegedly Arrives in Stolen Vehicle
According to police, Jacobs arrived at Scotland Memorial Hospital while driving the vehicle McNeill had reported stolen.
Officers took the Laurinburg shooting suspect into custody without incident. Police also reported seizing a firearm from the vehicle.
Authorities have not publicly explained why Jacobs allegedly went to the hospital or whether she knew McNeill was receiving treatment there.
Charges Filed in the Case
Jacobs was charged with attempted first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed gun and discharging a firearm within the city.
The Laurinburg shooting suspect was booked into jail without bond, according to the police report.
The Laurinburg Exchange reported that McNeill was being prepared for transfer to another medical facility. Additional information about his condition was not included in the initial report.
Investigation Remains Active
The incident remains under investigation by the Laurinburg Police Department. Authorities have not released additional information about what may have led to the shooting.
The case began with officers responding to a shooting on Omega Avenue and quickly expanded into an investigation involving an allegedly stolen vehicle, a recovered firearm and an arrest at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
