Drivers traveling along U.S. 1 in the Sandhills should plan for overnight delays this week as lane closures are scheduled in Aberdeen and Southern Pines for utility relocation work tied to an upcoming roadway improvement project.

When and Where Lane Closures Will Occur

According to transportation officials, lane closures are planned in two sections of U.S. 1:

  • From Roseland Road to U.S. 15-501
  • From West Main Street in Aberdeen to Old U.S. 1 in Southern Pines

The work will take place overnight from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., beginning Tuesday, January 27 through February 3, weather permitting.

Why the Work Is Happening

The overnight lane closures are part of utility relocation “pre-work” ahead of a larger North Carolina Department of Transportation project planned for U.S. 1.

The upcoming project will introduce reduced-conflict intersections, a design intended to improve traffic flow and safety by limiting left-turn crossings. The design includes a center median to separate traffic lanes, along with designated U-turn areas — sometimes referred to as “U-turn bulbs” — that allow drivers to safely reverse direction and access cross streets.

What Drivers Should Expect

Motorists traveling through the affected areas during overnight hours should expect lane shifts, reduced speeds, and possible delays. Transportation officials urge drivers to remain alert in active construction zones.

Please pay close attention to posted signs for directions and use caution while traveling through work zones.
