The three-day championship began Thursday, July 30, and concludes Saturday, August 1. Players between the ages of 5 and 12 are competing on several championship courses across the Sandhills.
Rather than using one overall tournament leaderboard, the World Championship separates competitors into age and gender divisions. Results and standings are updated for each individual division as play continues.
Second Round Underway Across Pinehurst
Friday’s second round began with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. The scores recorded during the opening round were used to determine pairings and starting positions for the second day of competition.
The tournament brings together some of the top young golfers from the United States and other countries. For many players and families, earning an invitation to compete in Pinehurst represents one of the biggest accomplishments available in junior golf.
Competitors must navigate the same challenges that make the Pinehurst area internationally recognized, including demanding approach shots, carefully positioned bunkers and difficult putting surfaces.
The tournament is also an important event for the local community. Visiting families fill hotels, restaurants and businesses throughout Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen and the surrounding area during championship week.
Champions to Be Decided Saturday
The final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Champions will be crowned in each age and gender division following the completion of the third round.
The World Championship is described by U.S. Kids Golf as the world’s largest junior golf tournament. In addition to the three rounds of championship play, the week includes player registration, practice rounds, golf demonstrations, family activities and the Parade of Nations through the Village of Pinehurst.
Following the main tournament, selected 12-year-old players will have another opportunity to compete in the Van Horn Cup. The one-day event uses a best-ball format and features top boys and girls from the World Championship.
For spectators in the Sandhills, the tournament provides an opportunity to watch emerging golfers compete before many of them advance to high-school, college and potentially professional golf.
