Duke, Cameron Boozer run clinic against Stanford, UNC struggles

In men’s hoops, Duke ran a clinic Saturday, beating Stanford 80-50 thanks in large part to freshman phenom Cameron Boozer. He led all scorers with 30 points adding 14 boards to his stat list. The Blue Devils took advantage of the Cardinal converting 18 turnovers to 22 points.

Georgia Tech bested NC State Saturday, 78-74 while UNC was delivered its second-straight L, falling to Cal State, 84-78.

Duke, UNC women earn ACC wins, NC State falls to Louisville in OT

In women’s hoops, Duke doubled Georgia Tech, 93-46 last night while UNC got by Florida State, 82-55. NC State went into extra time against Louisville but fell short in the 88-80 final

Sandhills Community Flyers split weekend games

The Sandhills Community College men’s basketball split contests at home Friday and Saturday. Virginia Peninsula edged out the Flyers Friday, 83-82. The Flyers were able to muster up an 85-81 win against Cleveland Community Saturday. The college hosts its annual Martin Luther King Jr tournament, starting at 1 pm in the Hanger.

Canes defeat Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils

On the ice, the Canes earned a pair of wins over the weekend, defeating the Panthers in a convincing 9-1 game before hitting the road Saturday to top the Jersey Devils, 4-1.

Hornets fall to Warriors, top Nuggets in weekend matches

Hornets lost to the Warriors 136-116 Friday but Charlotte redeemed itself against the Nuggets, 110-87

Area high school hoops action was highlighted by Grace Christian girls, who are now 18-1 on the season after the Crusaders topped Terry Sanford, 73-56.

Pinecrest teams had a good showing against Overhills Friday, but both boys and girls teams couldn’t get over the hump, falling and 49-46 and 47-45, respectively. They will take part in today’s Martin Luther King Jr. tournament held at Sandhills Community College. The girls open up against Queen’s Grant at 1 pm, while the boys will follow against Apex Friendship at 2:30

North Carolina Burn Ban Lifted Including Moore County

The statewide North Carolina burn ban lifted Friday morning for the remaining counties still under restrictions, including Moore County and several communities across the Sandhills. The North Carolina Forest Service announced the ban would officially end at 8 a.m. Friday following recent rainfall that helped improve wildfire conditions across the state.
