Aberdeen has gained a new public space in its historic downtown following a donation from the Friends of the Aberdeen Library.
The organization donated a nearly one-acre property located across Exchange Street from Aberdeen’s new library. Town commissioners formally accepted the property during their September work session, bringing the park under town ownership.
The property adds an outdoor destination next to one of downtown Aberdeen’s newest community facilities. Its location across from the library creates an opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy both spaces during a trip downtown.
The park includes a pollinator garden, providing habitat for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. It also features a recycled-steel sculpture named “Diane’s Mojo,” giving the property a distinctive piece of public art.
The donation reflects the Friends group’s continuing support for the library and the surrounding community. With the park now accepted by the town, the property can remain a public gathering place and complement the activity generated by the new library.
The addition also expands the network of walkable public spaces in historic downtown Aberdeen. Green space, public art and the nearby library give residents another reason to spend time in the downtown district while supporting its role as a community destination.
