Cleanup and damage assessments are underway in Fayetteville after a confirmed tornado moved through the northwestern part of the city Sunday, October 11.
The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado near Fayetteville shortly after noon. Preliminary storm reports documented extensive damage around the Skibo Road and Morganton Road area, including vehicles that were moved or overturned, roof damage, downed trees and electrical outages.
Five Buildings Reportedly Damaged
Fayetteville Fire Chief Kevin Dove told ABC11 that five buildings along Skibo Road sustained structural damage. Rooftop heating and air-conditioning equipment was dislodged at the Walmart in the affected area, prompting an evacuation.
Emergency responders carried out search-and-rescue and hazardous-materials operations Sunday. No serious injuries had been reported as of late Sunday, although officials were continuing to inspect buildings and evaluate the damage.
Weather Service Survey Expected Monday
National Weather Service crews are expected to survey the Fayetteville damage Monday. Surveyors will examine construction damage, debris patterns and the length and width of the path before determining the tornado’s estimated strength.
Until that survey is completed, any Enhanced Fujita rating or final path information remains preliminary.
Residents Asked to Avoid Damaged Areas
Drivers should give emergency and utility crews room to work around the affected corridor. Residents should treat downed utility lines as energized, avoid entering visibly damaged buildings and follow instructions from local emergency officials.
