Sandhills Winter Storm Update: Snow, Cold, and Hazardous Travel

Updated: Southern Pines, North Carolina

Winter weather continues to impact the Sandhills this hour, with snow-covered roads, bitter cold temperatures, and gusty winds creating hazardous conditions across Moore County and surrounding areas.

What It Looks Like Right Now

Snow remains on the ground across Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Carthage, Vass, and Whispering Pines. In many locations, temperatures remain below freezing, preventing significant melting and allowing slick spots to persist—especially on untreated roads.

Winds remain gusty at times, contributing to drifting snow and reduced visibility in open areas.

Travel Conditions

Roads remain snow-packed and icy in spots. Bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas are especially dangerous. Drivers should use extreme caution or avoid travel altogether if possible.

If you must drive, slow speeds, increased following distance, and extra time are strongly advised.

Cold Weather Concerns

Wind chills remain dangerously low, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Residents should limit time outdoors and dress in layers if going outside.
