Cumberland County Public Health is investigating a confirmed case of tuberculosis involving an individual at Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville.
According to reporting from WRAL, health officials identified more than 260 people who may have had close contact with the individual. Those considered potential close contacts have reportedly been notified directly and are receiving information about recommended screening and follow-up care.
Officials have emphasized that the investigation is focused on the people identified through contact tracing. Families who have not received direct communication from the school system or health department have not been identified as close contacts at this time.
Tuberculosis, commonly called TB, is caused by bacteria that usually affect the lungs. It spreads through the air after prolonged or repeated exposure to someone with active TB disease, but it is not typically transmitted through brief, casual contact.
Parents, students and staff connected to Seventy-First High School should continue monitoring official communication from Cumberland County Schools and Cumberland County Public Health. Anyone contacted as part of the investigation should follow the screening instructions provided by health officials.
