Carthage water customers will be required to conserve water beginning the week of Monday, October 12, as the town starts scheduled maintenance and upgrades at its water treatment plant.
The restrictions are expected to remain in place through December 6. Town officials emphasize that the action is not related to drought conditions or a problem with the community’s drinking-water quality.
Customers Must Reduce Water Use
Every household and business served by the Carthage water system is being asked to reduce consumption by at least 20 percent compared with the previous month.
All nonessential uses of drinking water will be prohibited. Garden and landscape irrigation must be limited to the minimum amount necessary to keep plants alive. Customers should also postpone unnecessary outdoor water use and avoid allowing water to run when it is not needed.
Conservation measures recommended by the town include taking shorter showers, repairing leaks promptly and running washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads.
Temporary Water Supply Will Be Limited
The treatment plant is expected to be out of service for approximately eight weeks. During that period, Carthage will purchase water from Moore County and the Town of Southern Pines through emergency connections between their water systems.
Officials say the amount available through those connections is limited and must support homes, businesses, essential public services and emergency needs. The purchased water will also cost Carthage approximately twice the rate the town charges its customers.
Restrictions Expected Through December 6
The restrictions are currently scheduled to continue through Sunday, December 6. That timeline could change depending on maintenance requirements and operating conditions.
Customers should monitor town communications for updates during the project.
