Moore County Hazardous Waste Collection Set for November 21

Cleaning out the garage or sorting through old household chemicals? Moore County’s annual household hazardous waste collection will offer residents a free disposal opportunity on Saturday, November 21, 2026. Medication drop-off and paper shredding will also be available.

When and Where

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pinecrest High School, 250 Voit Gilmore Lane, Southern Pines. It is open to Moore County residents only.

What Can You Bring?

Accepted materials include paint and paint thinners, solvents, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, batteries, propane cylinders, used motor oil, antifreeze and gasoline.

Liquid containers cannot exceed five gallons. Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides must remain in their original containers for identification. Commercial waste, electronic waste, explosives, radioactive materials and red-bag waste will not be accepted.

Medication Drop-Off

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office will accept prescription and over-the-counter medications in their original containers. Injectables and sharps will not be accepted.

Paper Shredding

Keep Moore County Beautiful will provide shredding in the adjacent parking lot, with a limit of eight bags.

Prepare Materials for Safe Transport

The Village of Pinehurst advises residents to keep hazardous products in their original, labeled containers and never mix unknown substances. Containers should be closed, checked for leaks and secured so they cannot tip or spill. Keep chemicals away from passengers during transport.

Proper disposal helps protect sanitation workers, keeps hazardous materials out of ordinary waste streams and reduces the risk of contamination affecting local waterways.

Another Disposal Option

Moore County also operates a permanent household hazardous waste facility at 364 Eagle Springs Road. It accepts a limited range of residential materials on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; do not assume every item accepted at the November event can be taken there.

For questions about the event or a particular material, contact Moore County Solid Waste at 910-947-3637.
