House Candidate Charles Taylor Files Defamation Lawsuit Over Campaign Mailer

Republican North Carolina House candidate Charles Taylor has filed a lawsuit against the Sandhills Citizens Alliance, alleging that statements in a campaign mailer were false and defamatory.

The complaint was filed in Lee County Superior Court and seeks more than $25,000 in compensatory damages, along with punitive damages and other costs. Taylor disputes claims concerning a business operating on property he owns and the status of a complaint involving his financial-disclosure documents.

The political action committee has defended its focus on Taylor’s relationship to the property and questions surrounding his disclosures. The lawsuit represents Taylor’s allegations, and the court has not ruled on the claims.

Taylor is running against unaffiliated candidate April Montgomery in House District 51, which includes Lee County and part of Moore County.
