Moore County’s proximity to Fort Bragg, its experienced military population and its quality of life could help the area attract more defense companies and technology investment.
That was the message during the Moore 100 event held Oct. 13 at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst. Federal, state, military, education and business representatives attended the gathering to discuss ways Moore County can become a larger part of North Carolina’s defense economy.
Building on North Carolina’s military presence
Presenters said North Carolina’s defense sector contributes an estimated $66 billion annually to the state economy. The state has eight military installations, five Tier 1 research universities and approximately 20,000 service members transitioning out of the military each year.
Those departing service members represent a potential workforce for defense contractors, manufacturers and emerging-technology companies.
U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson said Moore County’s location near Fort Bragg and its reputation as a desirable place to live could help attract companies supporting military operations and advanced manufacturing.
Southern Pines Mayor Taylor Clement said helping veterans transition into civilian careers would allow the Sandhills to retain experienced workers and community leaders. Many military families have already established ties to the region and may prefer to remain here if suitable employment is available.
Technology and workforce development
Maj. Gen. J. Patrick Work of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg discussed how technology, data and rapid innovation are changing modern military operations. He also highlighted the Joint Innovation Outpost as a place where military personnel, private companies and community partners can collaborate.
Representatives from Sandhills Community College, state government and defense businesses discussed training programs, entrepreneurship and the challenge of moving new technology from development into large-scale production.
A representative of drone manufacturer Dracoee said the company wanted to locate close to Fort Bragg so its team could work directly with military personnel and improve products more quickly.
The discussion did not include a specific announcement about a new company or facility coming to Moore County. Instead, it focused on creating the workforce, partnerships and business environment needed to compete for future investment.
For Sandhills residents, that effort could eventually mean more local jobs in technology, manufacturing, logistics and professional services.
