The Fayetteville Fire Department plans to hire 18 additional firefighters after receiving more than $2.3 million in federal funding.
The money comes through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program, commonly known as SAFER.
Two additional ladder trucks planned
The city says the new firefighters will staff two additional ladder trucks. Fayetteville currently operates five ladder trucks positioned around the city.
The additional units are intended to strengthen staffing, coverage and emergency-response capabilities in areas identified through the department’s ongoing review of community risks and service demands.
Positions expected to be filled in 2027
Fayetteville Fire currently has 369 personnel. City officials expect the 18 new positions to be filled and the additional ladder units to enter service in early 2027.
Fire Chief Kevin Dove said the federal funding will reduce the burden on local taxpayers while improving safety for both firefighters and the public.
The SAFER program helps local departments meet national staffing, response and operational standards. Fayetteville Fire holds an Insurance Services Office Class 1 rating and is internationally accredited through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
