CARTHAGE, N.C. — The Moore County Board of Commissioners has approved more than $147,000 in Taser contracts for detention personnel and school resource officers.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office requested 25 Taser 7 devices and five Taser 10 devices at a total cost of $147,109.
According to information presented during the September 1 commissioners meeting, the equipment will help outfit detention-center personnel and provide devices for school resource officers joining the county’s expanding SRO program.
The Taser 7 devices will primarily be assigned to detention personnel. Previously purchased Taser 10 devices, along with the five newly approved units, are expected to be assigned to new school resource officers.
Sheriff’s Office representatives said the officers receiving the equipment will be required to complete appropriate training. Officials also told commissioners that Tasers have been used only a limited number of times in county schools.
Public Hearings Scheduled for September 15
Commissioners also scheduled public hearings for September 15 involving proposed changes to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance.
One proposal would allow elementary, middle and high schools as permitted uses in RA-20, RA-40 and Rural Equestrian zoning districts. Religious uses would also be permitted in RA-20 and RA-40 districts.
County planners said the changes would allow existing schools and religious institutions to expand while creating opportunities for new facilities in those areas.
A separate public hearing will consider requests involving four adjacent properties along U.S. Highway 1 near Vass. The applicants are seeking highway-commercial zoning for the properties.
Residents Address Cameras and Community Center
During the meeting’s public-comment period, residents raised concerns about the county’s use of Flock automated license-plate cameras. Other speakers addressed funding and the future of the former Davis Community Center serving Robbins, Highfalls and Westmoore.
The commissioners’ next special meeting is scheduled for September 10 at 6 p.m.
