Flood Watch Issued for the Sandhills Through Saturday Morning

A Flood Watch is in effect across much of the Sandhills as repeated thunderstorms could bring several inches of rain to the region Friday and Friday night.

The watch begins at 11 a.m. Friday, August 21, and continues through 8 a.m. Saturday, August 22. It includes Moore, Lee, Hoke, Richmond, Scotland and Harnett counties, along with other portions of central North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service, unusually moist and unstable conditions could support thunderstorms capable of producing very heavy rain. Rainfall rates could reach as much as three inches per hour in the strongest storms. Total rainfall amounts of two to five inches are possible in the watch area through early Saturday, although exact totals will vary by location.

Flash flooding could develop quickly

A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding, but it does not mean flooding is occurring everywhere. Flood warnings may be issued for specific communities if flooding becomes imminent or is reported.

Areas with poor drainage, low-lying roads, creeks and locations that have received heavy rain recently may be especially vulnerable. Repeated storms moving across the same communities could cause water to rise quickly and overwhelm drainage systems.

Localized flooding may develop even in communities that receive less than the highest predicted totals. A slow-moving thunderstorm can create problems in a short period, especially where leaves, debris or standing water restrict drainage. Small streams and roadside ditches may also rise faster than expected during an intense downpour.

Drivers should use extra caution during periods of heavy rain. If water is covering a roadway, motorists should turn around and find another route. The depth of floodwater can be difficult to determine, and moving water can sweep a vehicle from the road.

Friday forecast for Southern Pines

The Southern Pines area is expected to reach a high near 87 degrees Friday. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely later in the day, particularly during the late afternoon and evening. Additional storms are possible overnight as the Flood Watch continues.

Residents should keep phones charged, make sure emergency alerts are enabled and monitor updated forecasts before traveling or attending outdoor events. Anyone living near a flood-prone location should be prepared to move to higher ground if a warning is issued.

Families with Friday evening plans should check conditions before leaving home and allow additional travel time. Outdoor events may be affected by lightning even where flooding does not develop. When thunder is heard, people should move inside a substantial building or enclosed vehicle and remain there until the storm has safely passed.

Weather conditions can change quickly, and the timing and location of the heaviest rain will depend on where thunderstorms repeatedly develop. Updated forecasts, watches and warnings are available through the National Weather Service in Raleigh.
