New Transit Project Will Serve Sandhills Community College Riders

Sandhills Community College Empower to Work workshop

A newly funded public-transportation partnership is expected to make it easier for residents of Moore and Hoke counties to reach Sandhills Community College.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division has announced funding for 16 new Coordinated Public Transportation projects across the state.

One of those projects will provide reliable, ongoing trips to Sandhills Community College for riders in Moore and Hoke counties.

Project Designed to Expand Access

The Coordinated Public Transportation program encourages two or more transportation agencies to work together. By sharing resources, participating agencies can expand service while improving the quality and reach of existing transportation networks.

For the Sandhills, the project could help students and workforce-training participants who do not have dependable transportation to the college’s campuses and educational programs.

Transportation can be a significant barrier for students living in rural communities, particularly those balancing classes with work and family responsibilities. Reliable service may also provide additional access for older adults, veterans and residents with disabilities, depending on the final structure of the program.

Part of a Statewide Transportation Investment

NCDOT says the 16 funded projects are intended to improve mobility and connect residents with education, employment, medical care and other essential services.

The department’s Integrated Mobility Division works with local transportation providers to develop accessible alternatives for people who cannot drive or do not have access to a vehicle.

State officials say coordinated programs can reduce duplicated services while helping transportation agencies serve a wider geographic area.

Additional Service Details Expected

A launch date, route schedule, fare structure and rider eligibility requirements for the Sandhills Community College project have not yet been announced.

Those details are expected to become available as the participating transportation agencies finalize the service.

Sandhills Community College serves students from across Moore and Hoke counties through academic programs, workforce training, continuing education and career-development opportunities.

The new transportation partnership is expected to strengthen access to those programs while creating a more connected regional transit network.
