The Town of Aberdeen has reported that an estimated 8,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered Aberdeen Creek following a discharge on Saturday, Aug. 8.
The Aberdeen wastewater spill occurred near the intersection of North Sandhills Boulevard and Bion Butler Road. According to a public notice issued by the town, the Aberdeen Utilities Department was notified of the incident at approximately 6 p.m.
Wastewater Reached Aberdeen Creek
Town officials said the untreated wastewater was discharged into Aberdeen Creek. Aberdeen utility crews responded to the incident and took steps to reduce and contain the release.
The wastewater system returned to normal service at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday, about three hours after the department was notified. Cleanup and sanitizing efforts were also conducted following the Aberdeen wastewater spill.
The town’s notice did not identify what caused the discharge. No additional information was provided about any environmental testing or whether residents should take precautions around the affected portion of Aberdeen Creek.
Why Aberdeen Issued a Public Notice
North Carolina law requires the owner or operator of a wastewater collection or treatment system to issue a public notice when a discharge of at least 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater reaches surface water.
Because approximately 8,000 gallons reached Aberdeen Creek, the Aberdeen wastewater spill exceeded that reporting threshold. The town’s public notice was signed by Utilities Operations Manager Brandon Mills and released to residents and media outlets serving Moore County.

The town said efforts were taken to mitigate the release and that the affected wastewater system had returned to normal operation. Officials have not announced any additional service interruptions associated with the Aberdeen wastewater spill.
