Aberdeen Police are searching for a suspect following a shooting at Woodlawn Apartments that left a 40-year-old man critically injured.
Police identified 43-year-old Raheem Mahad Ewing of Aberdeen as the suspect in the shooting. Investigators said Ewing left the scene before officers arrived and was still being sought when the department released its latest update.
Man Airlifted After Woodlawn Apartments Shooting
Officers were dispatched to the apartment complex on Magnolia Drive at approximately 8:16 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, after receiving a report of shots being fired.
While officers were responding, emergency dispatchers received an additional call reporting that a person was on the ground and calling for help.
When police and other first responders arrived, they reportedly found a 40-year-old man suffering from two gunshot wounds. One of the wounds was to the man’s chest, while the other was to his arm.
First responders provided lifesaving treatment before the victim was airlifted to an area trauma center in critical condition. Authorities have not released the man’s identity or provided an updated report on his condition.
Multiple Agencies Assisting With Search
Aberdeen Police initially conducted a search of the surrounding area with assistance from law-enforcement K-9 units. Officers searched several locations near the apartment complex, including the area around hotels near Columbus Drive and South Hill Road.
Police later identified Ewing as the suspect involved in the shooting. Investigators said he fled before law enforcement arrived.
The Aberdeen Police Department is receiving assistance from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation as the search and investigation continue.
Police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident. Investigators have not publicly announced what may have led to the confrontation.
