Richmond County railroad crossing closures are scheduled to begin March 23 as part of a multi-week CSX maintenance project affecting drivers in the Hamlet area and parts of South Carolina.

According to project officials, the work will include the installation of new railroad ties. Each crossing is expected to be closed for two to five days, depending on the scope of maintenance required.

Which Richmond County Railroad Crossing Closures Are Scheduled?

The first local closures will impact Freeman Mill Road and Airport Road, both located just west of Gin Mill Road. Freeman Mill Road is expected to close March 23, followed by Airport Road on March 24.

A private road between N.C. 177 and the Duke Energy Smith Energy Complex is scheduled for closure March 25. The Osborne Road crossing near Holmes Road is expected to close March 26.

Additional closures will affect crossings in Chesterfield and Marlboro counties in South Carolina, including portions of S.C. 177, Community Road near Wallace, E. Market Street in Cheraw, and other surrounding routes.

The South Carolina crossings are as follows:

March 27 – Pleasant Hill Road, just east of intersection with S.C. 177; Hatcher Hill Road, west of Englewood Drive March 29 – stop-and go flagging operation on S.C. 177 between Pleasant Hill and Ebenezer roads

March 30 – Step Road, west of intersection with S.C. 177

April 6 – Community Road, east of intersection of U.S. 1 and S.C. 9 (near gas stations in Wallace); Huger Street, between Bryant and Agerton streets

April 8 – E. Market Street (behind Springhill Suites in Cheraw)

April 9 – Liberty Street pedestrian and bike path, between Chestnut and Front streets); Front Street, near Church Street

April 10 – Second Street, between Church and Maynard streets

What Drivers in the Sandhills Should Know

While these Richmond County railroad crossing closures are outside Moore County, many residents in Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Pinehurst travel toward Hamlet, Cheraw, and the state line for work or business.

Officials warn that closure dates are subject to change due to field conditions. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time during the maintenance period.
