Pinecrest basketball is heating up, celebrating two big wins from both girls and boys squads, including pink night event

Pinecrest boys and girls are finding the right rhythm now, and have earned some big wins in January. None bigger or more meaningful, perhaps, than Tuesday’s rescheduled pink night against Hoke County.

“We are so thankful each season we are able to dedicate a game to such an amazing cause,” Pinecrest head coach Aysha Pride said. “We thank everyone for showing up in their Pink, purchasing shirts or simply making a donation.”

The proceeds to shirt sales of the team’s “play with purpose” fundraising efforts will benefit local. FirstHealth Cancer Center was a sponsor and was attending the games Tuesday, making a halftime speech about the center, cancer awareness and what it all means.

Not to mention, Pinecrest earning a pair of wins in conference fashion. The boys 75-53 but not before the hosting girls earned a 61-42 win against the Lady Bucks.

“Ït was a big night for our junior Kennedy Moore,” coach Pride said. “She was scoring at all three levels.

“We had major contributions from our freshman Joelle Cole and senior Janiylah Carthen,” Pride added. “Ït was an important 8A match up against Hoke County.”

Last night the Patriots also earned two contests on the road against Jack Britt. The boys topped the hosts 70-60 after the girls survived a close with, 47-42. Ava Vonderkall scored six including a huge late game triple to help seal the victory on the road, coach said. Moore led scorers with 16 while Nia Berrien scored 10 with seven boards.

Union Pines is 2-0 with opening rounds of wrestling team duals are underway

Wrestling team duals are underway and Union Pines earned its first two wins from the postseason, defeating West Johnston, 62-9 before dominating Northern Nash, 78-0.

Pinecrest boys defeated Hoke County, 39-31 but fell to Hough 48-21.

Hoke County hires veteran coach Duran McLaurin for football

In other sports news from the Sandhills, Hoke County High School announced its newest hire. Duran McLaurin will take over the head coach position for the Bucks. According to the Hoke County Journal, who first broke the news, McLaurin has been the head coach at SeventyFirst High School for more than a decade and has 28 years of teaching experience.

Hornets pickup win at home against Rockets, players get suspensions from Detroit brawl

In Charlotte, The Hornets redeemed themselves last night against the Rockets, 110-107. Brandon Miller scored 31 with nine boards while teammate LaMelo Ball was money from downtown, making seven 3’s and scored 24.

Charlotte did it without Mile Bridges and Moussa Diabate as they were suspended four games after the antics against Detroit Pistons.

Sandhills CC Flyers latest scores

Sandhills Community College earned a competitive contest against Patrick and Henry Community College, 94-91 on the road. The JUCO basketball program is readying for the postseason as college plays host to the Region 10 tournament which starts Feb. 20-22.

“Sandhills Community College is proud to host the NJCAA Region 10 Tournament, featuring teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Southwest Virginia,” Joshua Ward, SCC athletic director, said.
