Pinecrest hosts Hoke County for pink night; Union Pines hosts Lee County

Tonight is the rescheduled pink night for Pinecrest. The girls and boys host Hoke County and “play with purpose” as they raise awareness and funds for local cancer care benefiting FirstHealth Cancer Center. Girls tipoff at 6 p.m. with boys to follow. And an important conference meet right up the road as Union Pines hosts Lee County. Girls tipoff at 6 p.m. and boys to follow.

West Johnston swept Union Pines in a doubleheader home game for the Vikings. Both contests were close. The girls fell 43-34 in the opening match before the boys were topped 82-71 in the nightcap. And in Southern Pines, the O’Neal School girls were overwhelmed by the visiting Freedom Christian Academy, 56-36. Scotland County boys were able to overcome Gray’s Creek, 59-54 but not before the Lady Scots struggled, falling 46-9.

Rockingham native held to 0 in NC State fallout to No. 24 Louisville

In college hoops, NC State struggled against No. 24 Louisville, 118-77. NC State died by the 3, shooting 18% from beyond the arc. Paul McNeil Jr., was held to 0 points and a non-factor. The sophomore from Rockingham has averaged 14.1 points per game this season.

Another Seahawks victory, this time for UNC-Wilmington. They take over standings as lead spot in the Coastal Athletic Association, knocking off Charleston, 76-64.

No love lost in Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets brawl

In Charlotte, no love lost for Detroit as 4 players get ejected in the third and Charlotte coach Charles Lee was tossed after a no-call meltdown in the fourth. Eastern Conference leading Pistons survived the Hornets, 110-104, ending an NBA best 9-game win streak for the Hornets who have been on an absolute tear.

Rookie sensation the Kon man scored his 1,000-point milestone, becoming the first rookie to reach that milestone this season. Despite the loss, the Hornets are firing on all cylinders, and could make the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

No doubt both teams have April 10 circled for another round of physical basketball in Charlotte.
