Verizon customers in Moore County, Southern Pines, and across the Sandhills were hit hard Tuesday after a massive nationwide outage knocked out cell service for nearly 10 hours.

According to TechRadar, the outage began around 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time and caused phones to display “SOS” instead of network bars, leaving users unable to make calls or send texts.

What Happened?

At its peak, DownDetector recorded more than 180,000 outage reports nationwide. Verizon confirmed the disruption and later apologized, promising customer credits for those affected.

Service was officially restored just after 10:20 p.m., though Verizon has not yet revealed what caused the failure.

Customers in Pinehurst, Aberdeen, and Southern Pines who are still experiencing problems are advised to restart their phones.
