St. Andrews University was founded as a result of the merger of Flora Macdonald College (1896) and Presbyterian Junior College (1928) in 1958. The University further expanded in 1991 with the creation of the St. Andrews, Sandhills Campus Program. The Sandhills Campus Program provides the residents of Moore and surrounding counties the opportunity to enter into one of three respected undergraduate degree-completion programs on the campus of Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina. This allows “nontraditional” students the opportunity to finish the junior and senior years of college through evening and Saturday classes, without disrupting a career or family life.
Each of the major programs provides depth of knowledge in the subject area. Professors do more than present the material. Classes challenge the student to think critically and to express ideas clearly and effectively. Nontraditional students from a wide variety of backgrounds bring invaluable, firsthand insights into the relationship of classroom material to the “real world.” Finishing a degree or adding a second degree can be critically important for long-term career advancement — whether the goal is to gain up-to-date knowledge in a particular field, or to sharpen the reasoning and communication skills that are important in every aspect of professional life.
